In basic terms, Claire Thomson Jonville is a very cool woman. The kind of woman that you want to be friends with, but also the kind of woman you want to be. The former Editor-in-Chief of Self Service magazine, is now Editorial Director of i-D France, and a much-sought after creative consultant. Scottish-born, now living in Paris, she is renowned for her exquisite taste and relaxed but refined style. As she hits the fashion month trail of New York, London, Milan and Paris, Thomson-Jonville has packed a suitcase full of her favourite Reluxe finds, and here she shares her insider knowledge on shopping and style...
What is in your capsule wardrobe? Cargo pants, a little black dress, an oversized masculine black blazer, sneakers, gold heel sandals, and luxe joggers. All classic effortless pieces that I know will work with everything and for any occasion. How do you shop vintage? I shop by colour and designer. I’m very specific when I shop and I always know exactly what I’m looking for. How do you dress for fashion month? I keep it minimal, mostly black. Versatile looks that work for multiple events in a day. Comfy, cool, and chic. How do you pack? Do you pack everything or in edited outfits? I prepare full looks based around a key piece like a statement Chanel parka or a tiny Saint Laurent dress, then add a few pieces that go with everything like a masculine blazer, white tank top, and cargo pants. What is the definition of New York style to you? I like the more downtown, slouchy vibe, less the polished uptown look. What is the definition of Parisian style to you? Definitely a minimal, less-is-more feel. Heels but no makeup. Something undone. How do you change your looks per city? I don’t really; it’s more about my mood than location. What is the piece of fashion that you are still searching for? The perfect jeans. What is your favourite styling tip? Look at your finished outfit and take one thing off.
Who is your fashion icon? Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Is there anything you buy every season? White tees and gold jewellery. Which designers do you hunt for in vintage stores? Phoebe’s Celine, 2000s Helmut Lang. and Prada. How do you shop for vintage jewellery and watches? I’m usually looking for something very specific. What does luxury mean to you? Spending time with my family. How do you shop? Ideally I do like to go to physical stores for the pleasure of the experience: Balenciaga, Prada, Celine etc, but more often than not I don’t have the time so I order online. What do you collect? Sneakers. What is timeless design to you? Vintage Helmut Lang never gets old.
