Designer Melissa Morris started her career working for a host of well-known designer labels but always had her own idea of what high-end fashion should be and what a brand could be. Reluxe meets the founder of luxury leather goods brand, Métier.
“Our mission is to marry timelessness and perfected craftsmanship with a profound understanding of how we live today. ”
What was the idea behind Métier?
After living in NYC for many years, I realized that it became a regular occurrence to search in panic for my phone, wallet, or keys inside my bottomless pit of a bag. One day, I was late for an important meeting and could not find my wallet. I was on the ground searching frantically when I looked around and saw three other people were doing the same thing. It was then I realised that the bags we use to carry our most cherished belongings do not reflect the needs of a modern life. The truth is, we are all on the go more than ever before and we need our bags to be as functional as they are beautiful. I created Métier to elegantly solve these modern problems. Our mission is to marry timelessness and perfected craftsmanship with a profound understanding of how we live today.
What inspires you?
I'm inspired by design that blends form and function. In particular, Charlotte Perriand is one of my biggest sources of inspiration. Her ability to blend form and function in a timeless, natural, and soulful way really speaks to me. Her chaise lounge is one of my favourite designs – I love that you can change your position based on whether you are conversing, reading, or relaxing.
What drew you to fashion?
I have always loved that what we wear helps reflect who we are and changes how we feel. When I wear a perfectly tailored shirt or an oversized jumper, I feel completely at ease.
“Métier is designed for people who have plenty to say and nothing to prove. They are people who are charting their own paths in life. They know what they want and they are constantly on the go.”
Describe the Métier wo/man
Métier is designed for people who have plenty to say and nothing to prove. They are people who are charting their own paths in life. They know what they want and they are constantly on the go. They recognize and appreciate how much detail and thought has gone into each piece.
How do you shop?
I love timeless, classic pieces that are crafted from the highest-quality materials and fit perfectly. When I find that, I am sold.
What does sustainable fashion mean to you?
To me, it means pieces that are created to stand the test of time and are not meant to be discarded. While they may not work for you forever, they are crafted from a timeless hand which makes them perfect for passing along.
“When I learned that Clare would launch Reluxe, I was so excited to be able to access her curated edit. I am very proud to have been a loyal client since day one.”
What's your signature outfit?
A lightwear black cashmere sweater, washed black bootcut jeans, suede cowboy boots, a tobacco coloured belt, and a gold chain necklace.
What have you been most proud of since launching Métier?
Without a doubt, it is the community that has surrounded and supported my brand. I am constantly amazed and inspired by our clients, partners, and editors that so authentically champion what we do.
What's next for the brand?
We have a few exciting launches coming up, including a partnership this summer with a film that I am so excited about. We are also starting to look for our second shop in NYC.
Why do you love Reluxe?
Like so many, I have been a fan of Clare’s work forever. Her sense of style is just so perfect. She makes you excited to get dressed. When I learned that she would launch Reluxe, I couldn't wait to access her curated edit. I am very proud to have been a loyal client since day one.
